Esta palestra-demonstração irá levá-lo através do desenvolvimento do Alfabeto Latino Ocidental, começando pelo ponto de confluência dos Hieróglifos Egípcios e Cuneiformes Sumérios, que dão origem aos inícios das 26 letras que usamos diariamente.  

O foco da apresentação é a caligrafia de algumas das letras, mostrando como esta evoluiu através dos diferentes períodos desde os alfabetos romanos até às letras Unciais e passando, depois, pelos alfabetos romanescos e góticos até aos alfabetos renascentistas e pela Copperplate. A visão sobre a caligrafia moderna e as ferramentas contemporâneas e a forma como afetam o desenvolvimento da escrita com aparo também será abordada.

Paul Antonio is one of the best calligraphers in the world. He was born in Trinidad and was interested in calligraphy from an early age. As a young man, he traveled to England where he studied calligraphy academically. In England he was one of the British crown calligraphers and he is one of the most fruitful members of the international Calligraphy Masters collective. Although he has lived most of his adult life in England, Paul has recently moved to Portugal, Setúbal, where he lives happily in the countryside and has his PAscribe-Scriptorium studio. Being so close to us now, we obviously had to invite him to share his knowledge with us!”

This lecture-demonstration will take you through the development of the Western Latin Alphabet starting with the confluence point of Egyptian Hieroglyphs and Sumerian Cuneiform which give rise to the beginnings of the 26 letters we use daily. 

The focus of the presentation is the handwriting of some of the letters showing how they evolve through the different periods from the Roman scripts through to the Uncial letters and then on the Romanesque and Gothic Scripts then into the Renaissance and Copperplate Scripts. The view on contemporary tools and how they affect the development of ruling pen scripts and modern calligraphy will also be covered.
